Default Victoria 150 events

The TC has a special section today for Victoria 150 events...

http://www.timescolonist.com/news/to...per/index.html

I'm even going to go out and buy the physical paper, for maybe the first time in 4 or 5 years.

Tragically, there does not appear to be a stand-alone website that shows all the 150 events, so we are stuck with the clunky City website:

Overall: http://www.victoria.ca/EN/main/depar...toria-150.html

Cultural events: http://www.victoria.ca/EN/main/depar...ty-events.html

Well, if their well-staffed and well-paid Communications department can't be bothered to properly present/promote the events online, then I can only imagine the lack of thought and organization behind the events. Hell, my cat could have come up with a better logo, and if that's indicative of the events, then I probably have sonething better to do.

Lucky for us, individuals outside City Hall created the events, and some look pretty good.

It's just really hard to see them all at a glance wading through the website there.

Only in Canada would we celebrate the incorporation of a city. The city IMO was founded with the Fort. Changing the legal status to "city" is red tape. The city existed before this time and nothing changed except some papers were signed. By this methodology you would say Canada is an older country than Italy, Germany, Austria and Hungary.

The city is 169 years old.

I dunno, you have to start counting somewhere. Natives called it a home well before 169 years ago.

^ Good point. Even less reason to focus on 1862.

VHF: "Happy 150th birthday Victoria!"

VibrantVictoria posters: "Hurr durr.. communications staff overpayed... crappy logo... I don't want to do any of this stuff... grumbl grumble.. city's not actually 150 years old"

Then we'll have to re-name Centennial Square since 1962 was not the 100th anniversary of the city. Better yet, let's tear it down and rebuild it with corporate naming rights and sponsorship. "Coca-Cola Presents the City of Victoria's mid-20th Century Square" has a nice ring to it.

I think it was a very nice ceremony, well done by all. I'm glad I went by.

I agree with VHF on this. Nice ceremony and a celebratory feeling.

I popped down around 2 but didn't see you, VHF. Lots of things to see including the new City Hall book, which includes the great vintage NFB "Townscape Rediscovered" DVD which has been discussed here.

Ya, I left a little early, maybe 12:30. One thing I liked is that while there was plenty of firemen (on shift, ready to go to a call if necessary) there was no overabundance of police, really all I saw was the one that was showing off the car, and the kids were loving it.

The Maroika guy had Jay Rangel translating his speech, I love it when a white guy knows Japanese.
