Yeah they are moving the location to Gordon Head of all places... It has gone downhill in the last few years.

Where in Gordon Head? Sounds promising to me! Caramia - I promise to drive you home after one of their wonderful lamb roasts, with of course a starter of Kalamari and fried Goat's cheese.

I recall that Eugenes was mentioned on the local TV news when they did the coverage on the last night at Periklis. I think they said it was closing at the end of the month. Caramia - you better dash in for a meal soon!!

Meh, there's an Opa! in the Bay Centre. I know it's totally not the same thing, but at least there's another option.

I guess Millos is the only remaining place for authentic Greek food?

Times Colonist:
Quote:
Eugene's Greek Restaurant is leaving the downtown core after 30 years and moving to University Heights Shopping Centre in Saanich.

Terry Vassiliadis, who owns the popular eatery with brother Lee, said a combination of diminishing evening traffic and increasing street problems downtown are behind the move from 1280 Broad St., where the business has been rooted for 25 years. Their father, 69-year-old Eugene who still helps with operations, started the restaurant in the Royal Bank Mall on Fort Street in 1979.

Terry Vassiliadis said yesterday the downtown restaurant will close Jan. 24 and move to the former Campus Coffee location at University Heights. Serious Coffee, currently a half block away on Yates Street, will take over Eugene's space on Broad Street later this month.

The brothers also announced the opening next month of a franchise store at Colwood Corners owned by Cory Brune. The brothers have another Eugene's outlet at Fort and Foul Bay that opened in 1999.

It will be the second closure of a Greek restaurant downtown this month. Periklis shut after 30 years on Jan. 8 after the ownership group retired. That space on lower Yates street is being converted to a sports bar with a spring opening.

It makes me sad to read this:

Has anyone tried the Aegean Cafe at 731 Fort Street? I have yet to experience it but I have heard raving reviews.

I went to Eugene's for lunch today at their Foul Bay/Fort location.

The space was quite dirty and unkept.

I ordered a vegetarian souvlaki that consisted of a few vegetables wrapped in a pita and drowned in a sauce for $7. The offering left me more than disappointed and I doubt I'll return any time soon.

Like Pizza Pieman and many other joints: once a respected institution but suffered a long slide into mediocrity and obscurity.

So now we're left with just one location, that being Fort at Foul Bay, yes?

I went to the Foul Bay location the other day and for $8 the chicken skewer meal consisted of white onion heavy Greek salad with way too much feta and three measly 2"x1" pieces of dry chicken.

I tried Eugene's at Gordon Head once. I had a huge craving for calamari so I ordered that and the gyro platter. I have to say, it was a disappointment. The gyro was gross, the calamari was bland and the salad was warm....

I find Opa! far better and cheaper.

Maria's in Sidney is hands down the best fast-food Greek food on the south Island. It's worth the drive.

I've only been gone for a few months and so much has changed! When I come back in December, I look forward to trying more restaurants!

I'm definitely a huge fan of Greek food, gonna check out Maria's!
