^True, but would Matt be satisfied with a sublease?

I think the nearby Stores building would make a great pub with some major modifications.

Presumably, when and if it becomes a ferry passenger terminal, some other land more to the west becomes available for other waterfront stuff. But I'm not sure how you get Clipper passengers and their vessels over to that side of the parking lot for Coho vehicles. But I have not looked at it that close.

My guess is that they would build a passenger walkway for the coho passengers to almost down where the Clippers dock now. Clippers would hopefully be a lot closer to the main building and perhaps with any luck would require the removal of Undersea Gardens.

Was listening to someone about this in the morning on CBC and they reiterated that this would be a combined facility that will include the Coho and the Clippers and would work with them on design to meet their needs.

This is perhaps the best thing that has happened to the harbour since I lived here.

It was hinted at that the rest of the land to the West would be redeveloped and I would assume the plan would be to put the Coho holding area underground.

^The only problem will be the tourists standing in the building bewildered--asking "which of these damn boats goes to Vancouver?"

If you look at the CRD map, you will see that the Undersea Gardens is located within a "foreshore lease" most likely in the name of Bob Wright.

I don't think that the Undersea Gardens is going anywhere anytime soon, at least not without the existence of a very large cheque.

This is great. It's going to be the best use of that space for the city.

From the article:
Quote:
Jamie Webb, president of the Maritime Museum's foundation, said, "We are a little disappointed that Victoria is not getting any new attractions or energies in the harbour."
The LAST thing the harbor needed would be some kitchy attempt at a tourist attraction. That style of tourism is dying quickly and the adherence to that in certain circles around here is really hurting things.

I'm shocked Victoria is doing something right and sensible. I'm guessing because this was mostly in the hands of the harbour authority and not the dean team?

I don't think of the Maritime Museam as kitchy.

Now that it is not moving in there, how about a purpose built building at Ogden Point for it. If it was a large enough entity I think it could draw people to it, and would certainly get some cruise ship clientele.

It sounded like it may at some point get a purpose built portion elsewhere in the Belleville development. I am expecting that we will see many more buildings to the west of the CPR building.

Now they are talking about a floating 2-3 storey building in the harbour.

Wouldn't the harbour be a wee bit congested if you have shore development and floating development?

That is the craziest idea yet. Next they will want to put remote controls into the exhibits and let the tourists pilot them around the harbour.

Hard to make out the float planes taxiing around in that pic.

Where would this be located?

In order to illustrate the potential of the entire lands I will re-post these concept sketches released by the Mayor's task force a few years ago.

Note: These sketches are just concept drawings to illustrate the possibilities that could occur on the site. They do not represent any existing proposal.

It is up to the development community to initiate a detailed proposal of their own.

Overview: note the new Hilton hotel on Belleville and its north/south orientation (vs. the east/west of the current motel)

Harbour view. Note the hotel at the extreme west side of the site (approx 12 storeys)

Belleville looking west. Note the CP building at right. The Wax Museum would be relocated in the new commercial building near the new terminal:

Belleville looking east:

Harbour side plaza. The lower walkway is for screened passengers, separated from the public by some sort of glass wall:

Not bad, but needs to loose the square or reduce it by half at least. This is an area absolutely drowning in open spaces.

The The Bateman Foundation has been announced as a major tenant at the Belleville CPR Steamship Terminal building, and will include a gift store on the main level, and a major gallery on a floor above.

The gallery should be open by Spring.

^ Sorry the gallery or the old pics of the plan for the terminal. If the latter than you are correct it will not happen.

City Council has nothing to do with it. The landlord (GVHA) can rent to whoever they want. I think it's a great idea and will be a good draw.

Yes. It's a good fit. Credit to Royal Roads University for having been the incubator for the Bateman Foundation for years.
