Some might go so far as to call it the "soft underbelly" of downtown Victoria.

Amazing. I do agree with NP however even at the Atrium I would have preferred the building meet the sidewalk proper and then have a canopy than a setback.

I haven't heard much on this once "hot topic" in a while. Any progress updates?

We are expecting the project to be back in front of Council in the early fall at which time we hope that it will be referred to Public Hearing.

Thank you for the update Jon. I consider this to be one of Victoria's most exciting projects and I really hope it encounters few hurdles to get it off the ground.

City Council will never schedule a controversial public hearing during the summer months or December as they will be accused by NIMBYs of doing this on purpose to lower attendance.

The Northern Junk project will be back before City Council in early December seeking referral to Public Hearing. Wish us luck? Letters of Support to Mayor and Council would be welcome.

For the life of me I don't understand how you can invest so much into a project that takes so long to move through the process. If you decide to change vocations.....a patience councilor comes to mind.

Good luck at the public hearing. I will send the Mayor and council my thoughts on why the improvement of this derelict area can add to and benefit the vibrancy of city.

Clearly, any change to this eyesore property would be an improvement. The challenge will be to convince City Hall that this specific proposal should be allowed.

I am really looking forward to this area being developed. As far as I'm concerned it can't happen fast enough!

If the new bridge, Bayview Promontory, and this could be finished within a two year span that would be awesome.

As much as I want to see the Janion development happen and as much as I really like that rendering, I'm not so sure it's a great idea for the new section of the Janion to look so similar to the Northern Junk development's new buildings. I suppose I can live with it. Each project looks terrific on its own.

My other concern would be the parking lot next door to the Janion. That property is going to be redeveloped eventually, like it or not. With Mermaid Wharf and the Janion both being so long and narrow and hemming that site in, I think I can hear the uproar already.

It's federal land though, right? As much as I hate to ever suggest a park, why not a park? With a parking lot, and a simple canoe/kayak launch facility - a simple public wharf. And how about this, a building, with access only to paid "members" where downtown residents could store their kayaks, for a fee of course? Maybe a long-term operating agreement could be worked out with someone like Ocean River to maintain it. I mean the building could be simple, a roof and chainlink fencing sides for security of the goods inside. Nothing crazy. If it's well-lit, it'll be vandal-proof with a condo on each side looking down into it.

The waterfront may be federal land, but the parking lot at 1618-1622 Store (north of the Janion) is owned by principals of Farmer Construction and a local company called Central Contract Parking.

Ah, OK, when Reliance bought the Janion, I thought they bought some federal land behind it (this still might be true), and there was still another federal parcel maybe for sale. I guess not.

This has to be the most exciting project that I seen in a long time. I think it will have a VERY positive impact on that neighborhood in particular.

This is a fantastic proposal which will bring vibrancy to the city and waterfront. I hope the meeting on Thursday goes well for Reliance.
