54 year-old Stan Peterec is planning an event this summer at RAP. In it, he himself will be attempting to become the second North American to win recognized fights in five consecutive decades (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's). If he succeeds he'll join Roberto Duran and Jack Johnson.

Should be fun.
Even more unexpected is that the 48-year-old kickboxer and the owner of a gym in his name on Fisgard Street is ranked the fourth toughest man on the planet.

"It's embarrassing really," says Peterec of the ranking in Black Belt magazine earlier this year. Black Belt bills itself as world's leading magazine of self-defence.

"It's just what I need," says Peterec, a former World Kickboxing Association light middleweight champion, rubbing his hands down his face.

"I would be OK with it if it said fourth most knowledgeable person about martial arts, but this? I'm really not putting too much stock into it [the ranking]."

The magazine story comes at an interesting period in Peterec's life.

It's called age and the realization that it's creeping up on him -- fourth toughest man on Earth or not.

Peterec says he had always dreamed of fighting in the ring until he was 50. His last fight was six years ago. It was a knockout in an ultimate fighting event.

Who won, Peterec is asked.

"Me," he responds, sounding surprised the question was necessary.

Peterec was hoping to make a comeback Sunday at the King of the Ring event he is organizing and promoting at Bear Mountain Arena, but thought the better of it. Between running his martial arts gym, training students and promoting Sunday's card, Peterec hasn't had much time to think about fighting, or at least his fighting.

 Merchants Launch 'Shop Local' Movement

May 15, 2012

(News Release) VICTORIA — Victoria-area business owners have joined forces to promote locally owned and independent businesses — keeping the local economy vibrant in more ways than one.

That sounds like a good idea, in general. I think it's likely worthwhile for these businesses to spend a bit of time and effort getting their "local" message across.

But, I should caution, while customers like to talk about supporting "local" - price, service, convenience and selection will win out over any "local" campaign for 95% of your potential customers.

So although I think it's a great initiative, it is just one part of a great customer experience that everyone needs to strive for.
May I know how those of you who move around frequently prevent against a possible loss of coverage? The question primarily relates to spending larger amounts of time in the States. I believe the travel insurance that most of us customarily purchase for travel there is issued dependent upon holding valid provincial healthcare.

4 essential steps to entering Symphony in the City:
Look fabulous.
Walk the red carpet.
Put your hand out for a red carpet cocktail.
Smile for the camera.
Now enjoy live music, fine food and drink, an incredible silent auction and an evening of fun while supporting the Victoria Symphony’s many artistic and education programs.

This is a good idea. I like the idea of a relatively inexpensive, non-seated dressy event. I'd much rather go to this than attend a seated charity event like Visions (~$350) or the David Foster thingy ($1000). Obviously, the price makes it attractive for younger or non-professional types. We likely don't have enough events like this in general.

Chard Development purchased the 819 Yates property from Emaar Canada in late 2011.

Emaar's concept eventually called for a two-tower design of 17- and 12-storeys, which you can read more about in this thread.

Developer Dave Chard now has the following plans:

Quote:

With two projects already on the go Chard confirms planning is ramping up for yet another development, this time back on the downtown turf in the 800-block of Yates Street.

Chard purchased the 819 Yates property last year and while short on details, he claims we “ain’t seen nothing yet.”

“We are going to be investigating all options of uses to see what else we can provide to the community. We do wish to look at a mixed-use office, residential and commercial project and from a downtown resident’s and business owner’s perspective what we are contemplating will be pretty exciting for everybody.”

More formal plans for 819 Yates, zoned for two towers of 17- and 12-floors, will be released next year.

Company representative Robert Jawl says the initial plans for 2950 Jutland Road envisioned a six-storey residential building with commercial space along the groundfloor. However, strong demand for office space at Selkirk has recently lead to a re-think of the project to include a mix of offices, residences and commercial space.
