Default Doughnut machine

All this talk of doughnuts, in another thread, conjured up some dusty old memory from the sixties. Does anyone remember, somewhere in Victoria, where there was an automated doughnut machine? I can vaguely remember standing in some store with my Mom and watching this thing. There was a nozzle that squirted the batter into a trough of hot oil and the donut bobbed along down this channel and some sort of lever thing flipped them over. The picture is not so vivid but the aroma sure still is. At first I thought it was Woodwards but now I'm thinking it was right downtown...maybe The Met?

Damn, that brings back memories! I remember such a machine at the Woodwards in West Vancouver, just like the one you describe!

I believe the doughnuts came out of the oil on a small conveyor belt, and were then dusted with sugar.

There was one in Market Square, part of Phat Pheege's Fudge Factory. They had it set up at a walk-through window facing inside the square, but that was back in the 80s/90s.

Default Donut Machine

I remember the automated donut machine in the basement of the original Eaton's in downtown Victoria. The basement had a bakery and a grocery store that was connected to the other building by means of an underground walking tunnel. The other building included a hardware department, ladies wear and a coffee shop that had counter service with sit-down stools.
I guess this was during the 50's to 70's or so until the store was torn down for the "new" Eatons Centre.
