I find running red lights and people not knowing what to do at a four way stop are two of the most dangerious traffic behaviours.

I once got a ticket (my only traffic ticket) doing a "California-style" rolling stop turning right at the bottom of Yates St.

Man! No one ever comes to a complete stop there!

How about the complete ingnorance of the "four-way-stop rule" when a traffic light is out.... That's crazy. Luckily everyone is going pretty slow anyway. But some seem to think if the light is out then the "major" street has the right of way. And the driver has the right to decide which street is the major one.

One of my pet peeves is how people tend to drive slower than the speed limit on arterials or highways, but then race through school zones and blind alleyways at 60K.

Last year, I told you guys about how, after a daytime power outage, I went to a street corner downtown to watch the idiot drivers blow through intersections at full speed (both directions!) while dodging cyclist and pedestrians as well as one driver who decided it was safe to drive the wrong way down a one way street. It's unbelievable that a non-operational traffic light is the only thing separating us from Road Warrior-type anarchy.

Technically a cop can give you a ticket for running a stop sign if you don't come to an absolutely complete stop (and they do). That means the point when you actually feel that little lean forward in your seat and then settle back in. I'm sure most of you just slow down to an almost stop when you are the only car approaching a 4-way stop. I know that's all I do.

As a cyclist I find it most dangerous when car drivers make concessions for me that go against the rules of the road. If we all stick to the rules then we avoid accidents, drivers don't need to break the rules to be nice to cyclists. It makes things confusing.

^^Yes, as a cyclist, I've had that too. A driver will stop on a busy street (even though he has the right of way) and wave me by. And I'm like, "Er, thanks buddy but I'd rather wait for the 2000 speeding cement trucks to pass by first".

Default Stop Signs in Victoria

I also did a survey at the new mall in Vic West and we sat in the car by blockbuster video for a while and counted 75 cars and trucks and motorbikes blow right through the Stop Sign and over the side walk there and turn left or right it was amazing to us both ,the only one who stopped at the Stop Sign was a Postal Truck!! Cudos to you !!!

^ever seen what they do at the 4-way stop at West Side Village? It's like the stop signs aren't even there! And to make things worse the architects placed a massive garbage bin on the corner of that intersection blocking the view from two approaches. Brilliant.

Every seen a cyclist come to a full stop at a four-way stop when there is no other traffic? Me neither. Even the Victoria cycling guy (his name escapes me) knows that is unrealistic.

I admit I do it. But I don't put my feet down. Full stop, then continue.

But then I also use hand signals.

Also, my bike is lit up like a spaceship from close encounters. One night years ago in Victoria I nearly got hit at an intersection and a pedestrian yelled at me, "I guess you need more lights!". The joke being that I had 8 powered lights on at the time.

OK, I would love to see some bad drivers AND bad cyclists ticketed. I commute from VicWest/Esquimalt to UVic for work -- sometimes by car, sometimes by bus. I see SO MANY people run stop signs, blow through occupied crosswalks and even red lights -- I've seen the same cyclist several times run through the red on Esquimalt at Catherine -- not turning right, just going through. Drives me NUTS.

Ah, the post truck actually stops at stop signs. Perhaps that's a reason why snail mail is slower than email? I kind of like Montreal driving styles where cars and trucks do slaloms around pedestrians and the walkers have to dive for cover, sprint, or swear at the drivers. I think it adds healthy cardiovascular workouts for the pedestrians' walks.
