Massive lineups at Westshore gas stations, as they drop from 139.9 to match Costco @ 111.9. I've been in the Chevron line for about 15 minutes, now.

I drove past Chevron an hour ago. I thought about it, but decided I'd rather go buy a coffee than wait in line.

Just going to burn it all off anyway

Bet the oil execs are chortling up in their towers right now watching this. That's exactly what they wanted to happen - conditioning the masses to believe 111.9 is a great deal.

Of course the major oil companies will all claim they lose money at $1.39. Costco must make up for the losses in volume!

How many of those vehicles were sitting in the lineup with the engine idling, going nowhere fast?

Well I wish somewhere else but the Westshore would lower prices.

Millstream southbound was backed up from just past the race track to the overpass, from all the congestion.

Dipping gas prices pushes Canadian inflation rate lower to 1.2% in May

Economists had expected a big decline in inflation in May from April's two per cent, but the actual drop was much steeper and took the consumer price index to the lowest level it's been since June 2010.

May's inflation plunge was mostly attributable to gasoline prices, which were 2.3 per cent lower than May 2011, the first outright decline in 23 months. Gas prices also dropped on a monthly basis, dipping 3.5 per cent from April.

As well, women's clothing slipped 3.2 per cent from last May, fresh vegetables cost 7.1 per cent less, video equipment plunged 13.3 per cent and the price of natural gas fell 16.6 per cent.

Price increases in May included food, up 2.5 per cent; electricity, 5.4 per cent higher; meat, up 6.1 per cent; homeowner replacement costs, up 2.4 per cent, and automobiles, which cost 1.7 per cent more than last year.

In Victoria today gas is at 121.9 L

$1.15 at Co-ops in the West Shore. Small lineups ensuing.

There was a man on CFAX today (can't remember what institute he was from) who was saying that due to the carbon tax in BC, BC's fuel consumption has dropped by 15% over the last three years.

The numbers here don't seem to support that. http://www.statcan.gc.ca/tables-tabl...ade37c-eng.htm

Can someone try to clarify this for me?

I would very surprised by that and the information at Stats Can would seem to be say it has not happened. The carbon tax is a pricing signal that should take five to ten years to have a significant impact. This is because it takes time for people to change their vehicles and time for what used cars are available to change as well. It will also have subtle impacts on decisions on where people live.

What also has to be considered with respect to fuel sales in BC is how much is being purchased in Washington state. I can not figure out if Stats Can has any mechanism to measure this.

I take what this man has to say with a grain of salt. He admitted to reimbursing (at least that's what he called it) Basi and Virk for their trip to Denver to watch a football game hosted by OmniTRAX in the BC Rail scandal. His firm, Pilothouse, was at the centre of that scandal. I'll let you judge for yourself if he knows what he is talking about regarding carbon tax, or is this just sour grapes towards the Liberals?

Carbon boondoggle robs poor to fuel rich

Government spin is usually merely tedious. However, on occasion it slips into a deceptive state and that is where B.C.’s much-lauded “carbon neutral” status resides today. [...]

This. In towns all across the southern edge of this province Canadians are filling up in American gas stations. It's so prevalent that when I recently pulled up to the border south of Creston the border guards just said "roll on up the street, fill up and come on back, son." The entire lineup of vehicles in front and behind me was making its way to the gas station. Meanwhile on the Canadian side a Petro Can sat completely empty priced nearly 30 cents in excess of the American station.

So does that mean our consumption could be increasing? Stats Can isn't showing a slowdown, so if you added all the folks buying American gas that would mean we're using more.

Of course this has absolutely nothing to do with the state of the global economy for the last 3 years....nope....nothing.....its all Gordo's awesome Carbon Tax implemented in the only jurisdiction in North America where school kids have to do without because the school district is mandated to purchase carbon credits........Did the man perhaps compare fuel consumption in other regions and observe no change?

Did he provide evidence to support his claim that directly links this tax to reduced consumption?

Did he also correlate the reduced consumption to socio-economic groups to see if those who could least afford to purchase fuel perhaps were most influenced by this tax?

However, Ottawa University professor law and economics professor Stewart Elgie says the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is wrong when it claims B.C.'s carbon tax isn't working.

Elgie says fuel usage in B.C. has dropped 15 per cent since the carbon tax was introduced in 2008, showing the tax is working in encouraging people to use their vehicles less.

Geez, you'd think an article by the CBC would offer some insight into the average fuel savings of new vehicles compared to what was available even back in 2005 and do a little bit of research into the number of BC drivers who dash across the border every week to fill up.

It's lies and crap like this that ensure good policies like the HST quickly rejected by the public.
