I didn't go to Hales's talk, but there's a very nice follow up by Brennan Clarke in the Victoria News, which ends with a quote by Hales that should be painted in 10-foot high letters on the conference centre & arena roofs. Read on: Quote:

I attended the lecture he gave at UVic on June 5. I and spoke to him in person right after his speech and we exchanged business cards. Hes a very intelligent guy and worth listening to. We are so backwards in this region when it comes to transportation planning. Portland didnt wait for density to come, they put in the streetcar system and density followed. So why cant we here do the same????

Speaking of regions/ regional issues, take a look also at this article, just posted on Crosscut, [url=http://www.crosscut.com/sound-transit/4378/The+case+for+rail+transit+is+hard+to+make+politica lly%2C+but+here+it+is/:f88b0]The case for rail transit is hard to make politically, but here it is[/url:f88b0]. Really interesting read, with lots of links to other articles, too, and it goes into the pros & cons (but comes out in favour of)... Some snippets: Quote:

Here's another question - if transit is interested in moving people and municipalities in attracting development then what financial role should municipalities play in value-adding? Where does that money come from? |

Actually BC Transit can afford BRT, but the provincial government refuses give the Victoria region a bigger piece of the transportation funding pie. Yeah I know Vancouver is a bigger city, and they have worst traffic problems (for their size), but we have growing traffic problems too. Where does the money come from? The gas tax! No I don mean increasing it, but preventing it from going to Ottawa. If the CRD could keep all of the money from the gas tax that is now leaving the region, that would be a good starting point. The public should rattling the provincial government's chains. And if that doesnt work, ask the private sector (which should be a last resort).

^ Completely agree and as I have said before since Victoria is one sixth the size vancouver we should get one sixth the spending on transportation. So right there would give us an 200 million dollar line (based on the cost of the Canada line).
