VibrantVictoria’s 2010 year in review part I

2010 was a busy year in the capital region and we here at VibrantVictoria tried to cover as much of the action as possible. Here are some of the highlights from the first six months of the year:

January
We started off the year with news of the delivery of the Johnson Street Bridge counter-petition. The controversial bridge replacement scheme would prove to be one of the hottest topics on VibrantVictoria’s discussion forum. A serious gas leak on the Point Ellice Bridge, was an event that served as a reminder of the vulnerability of our critical utilities infrastructure. There was optimism on Bear Mountain as word came that the on-hold Highlander condo might restart. The project remains stalled. Vibrant Victoria broke the story of a Downtown McDonald’s restaurant that tried to drive away loitering teens with a piercing sub-sonic whistle, later confirmed to be a Mosquito device.

Vibrant Victoria’s year in review part II

As summer heated up, public parking was covered, as was private parking lots later in the year. There was development news from Fan Tan Alley, Herald Street and Harris Green. An old Vic West warehouse, a derelict motel and a former Burnside Road thrift store all got a new lease on life.

Local media company releases global buildings map system

Skyscraper Source Media, a Victoria-based online media company and owner of VibrantVictoria.ca, has recently released a global buildings map system using Google Maps. The map system is freely available on the company’s flagship website, SkyscraperPage.com, and, while using Google Maps to display city and building information is nothing new on the internet, the particular way in which the maps are integrated with the global buildings database on SkyscraperPage is unique.

SkyscraperPage.com brands itself as a skyscraper enthusiast website, providing architecture and urbanism fans with an online community to share, research and discuss matters related to tall buildings. It is also used by real-estate and building industry professionals as an informative reference. I'm proud to say I'm responsible for having read into the Provincial Court record that VV is not a blog. I witnessed a traffic accident and posted pictures here on the forum. In court, the defense lawyer pulled out a printout of my original post here. I was asked if I posted it to the Vibrant Victoria blog and I replied yes, but that it was an Internet forum, not a blog. The judge was a bit confused and asked what the difference was and I said that generally, a blog is a personal journal while an Internet forum is more of a community bulletin board.

Glad to hear I am not the only one who finds accessing VV on a smart phone frustrating. Perhaps I am just dense, but is there a mobile version of this forum of which I am just not aware? I would be most grateful if there were.

I have never done it on a phone but works very well on my 7 inch tablet.

Not at this time. If it weren't for certain challenges with the vBulletin software used for the forum we probably would have installed a mobile version by now.

I actually browse the forum quite a bit on my iPhone (like right now) and find it quite easy for the most part.

I guess I just don't like the tiny text that I am forced to manipulate to enlarge and then it doesn't format properly on the screen. As G-man said I am sure it's OK on a tablet, but the 4" screen of a phone is just too small.

Nparker, try viewing it in landscape mode. This gives you a wider view of the forum and also double-tap on the text to zoom in on the text a little more. I find doing these things helps quite a bit.

Yeah that is what I do, but it would still be SO much better if the application itself was "mobile ready".

I've never used it, but isn't tapatalk supposed to be quite good? It does require the admins to set some things up, I think. No idea how hard that is.

We tried that, it was full of bugs.

As for vBulletin Mobile I have attempted multiple times to install it for another forum with only partial success. When I can get it to fully work I may install one for the VV forum.

And Tapatalk requires each user to buy the app. We don't like that and would rather buy a license to give our visitors free access to a mobile app.

We are pleased to announce VibrantVictoria's return to downtown Victoria after two years of operations in Saanich.

Skyscraper Source Media (SSM) has signed a lease for office space on Broad Street and will be vacating its Saanich premises on Enterprise Crescent by the end of February. The company operates the websites VibrantVictoria.ca and SkyscraperPage.com, the latter being a global resource for skyscraper enthusiasts and professionals. SSM also handles commercial image licensing of skyscraper diagram illustrations and the distribution of skyscraper poster products from its south Island office to clients from across the world operating in a variety of industries.
