Proposed Building [Colwood] Triangle Mountain subdivision | 21-lots | Proposed

Colwood is considering a 21-lot subdivision off Drummond Way - four of those lots will have access only from Zapata Place. No public notice nor review by Council appears to be required as the subdivision meets R1 Zoning requirements.

The entire lot, except for a small, steep sloping band designated as 'green space', will be developed. It appears that to accommodate the four lots that will be accessed from a road off Zapata Place, which is currently heavily treed and provides a corridor for water run off, will mean a substantial loss of native trees and plants including several mature Garry Oak, Arbutus, Douglas Fir, to name a few. Perhaps the developer is unaware? Colwood has no bylaw at present to preserve and protect our community's trees, in contrast to most other municipalities in Greater Victoria.

As a Triangle Mountain resident, I intend to let it be known this is unacceptable. Anyone out there who feels the same should contact the Planning Department and Colwood's Council members to voice his or her concerns about yet another subdivision that will have a significant negative impact on the neigbhourhood at large and species at risk.

I'm sure they will listen intently, and thank you for your valuable input. But this is Westshore after all! Enjoy your new subdivision.

However as a Triangle Mountain resident, it was acceptable, I assume, for trees to be removed to build your residence? Unless of course you live in a tree. Why was it OK in the past to cut down trees to enable urban sprawl, but now that it affects your home it is unacceptable?

Didn't you know a zoned area existed that might be developed?

This subdivision will employ a number of people for several years. It will create a larger inventory of homes at hopefully reasonable prices. The homes will mostly likely have suites relieving some of the pressure in the rental market and Colwood will gain a larger tax base.

So there are pros to development as well.

It's certainly true, Colwood can't really afford to give up on new tax revenues.

Sounds like you should move to Victoria ... I live on Triangle Mountain as well ... I think we have plenty of trees ... normally when they cut down a tree to make way for a place for YOU to put YOUR house ... they plant a couple in there place ...

I'm just guessing here, but I don't think these were the responses ewire was hoping for.
