Wasn't sure where to put this, but let me tell ya, I could have found a funner way to blow $11M.

Oak Bay Marine Group owner Bob Wright has acted on his concern over global warming by making the largest-ever cash donation to the University of Victoria - $11 million for scientific research.

The sport-fishing entrepreneur made the donation today at the Oak Bay Marina, where his company has its headquarters.

Of the gift, $10 million will help fund a new Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Building and $1 million will fund student scholarships.

"A lifelong passion and affinity for the sea has underscored my concern about the impact of global warming on our oceans," Wright said in a news release.

As a community and as a country, we must expand our investment in solid scientific research so we can pass on a healthy environment for generations to come."

"As a global centre of excellence in ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences, this generous gift will help take the University of Victoria's scientific research to an even higher level," said UVic President David Turpin in a news release.

"Bob Wright's $11 million investment is testimony to how we as Canadians can play a leading role in discovering the facts about environmental change on the global stage."

Wow, that is really awesome. We actually do have a collection of real benefactors, in the old fashioned sense in Victoria. There is a core of local business people who really do give a lot back to the community. Nobeless Oblige? Of course, I speak as a UVic Geography Grad so I am a bit biased, but what a great legacy!
