Default Quebec student protests

Quote:
It began on so picayune a point — a tuition hike of $325 a year. That’s about the cost of one bottle of needless water a day, or half the price of the cheapest cup of coffee. Is this the kind of cause North American students take to the street for? “Oh, our university fees, already the lowest probably in the Western world, are going to go up a loonie a day. A loonie a day!: To the Barricades Everyone. And bring me a latte.”
...

What’s going on in Quebec is not a protest. It’s a parody of one: the future elite of Quebec having a self-indulgent fit.

I tend to agree. It's pretty darned lame. I think the polls show that most Quebecers also agree.

Given that tuition costs are less in Quebec than anywhere else in Canada and an order of magnitude less then they are in the US, it is hard to be too sympathetic.

According to one of the protesters they won't be happy until it is free.

I guess this way all the marginal students who are never going to be employed using any of their university studies can prolong the time until they actually have to go out and find a job to support themselves.

It sounds so much better to say "I'm attending university" than "I'm unemployed and living at home".

Do you think nobody who's going to university is trying to pull themselves up by the bootstraps? Been there done that, and at the time, if you'd given me $325 once a year, you would have my loyalty still.

Not reading previous posts so forgive me but....every other province in Canada pays higher tuitions than Quebec...depending on field of study in most provinces. That having been said, the students in Quebec have isolated themselves from the rest of their Canadian peers but acting out and expecting more concessions from the tax payers of the rest of Canada to benefit solely the youth of Quebec. I thought this argument was over for a generation or two.

If Quebec students want to be exceptions to the rule then let them seperate and feel the real pain of independence when it comes to the costs of education.
Suck it up Quebec!

Try fundiung post-secondary eductaion without the support of 35 million taxpayers. Try doing it with only 7 million taxpayers.

Ya shoulda moved to Quebec, you would have been thousands ahead, and as a taxpayer I gave you a lot more than $325.

If Quebec separated I have a feeling many would leave the "country" and move to other jurisdictions in Canada.

If you are from Quebec you pay one rate and if you are from anywhere else in Canada you pay significantly more (about $4k-$5k more) per term.

This one reason alone suggest the simple folowing statement "suck it up princess you are getting a good deal already!"

Nope, the students say no deal.

I say screw them, see if they wanna come back to school in September or not, when they need more student-loan cash.
Quote:
MONTREAL - Things are right back where they started in the three-month Quebec student strike.

One school after another rejected a government proposal aimed at softening the effects of a seven-year, $1,800 tuition hike.

It's a major blow to Premier Jean Charest, who announced the deal on the weekend by telling reporters "everyone comes out of this a winner."

Students instead renewed mandates for strikes on Tuesday.

The province-wide demonstrations have already wiped out the spring semester for thousands of students, though most Quebec students attended classes. Several of the demonstrations degenerated into violent clashes and triggered a national debate about protest tactics and funding for education.

Even some Quebec student leaders appear surprised that the agreement they brokered with education department officials has fallen flat.

"We thought we had arrived at the beginning of the end," said Martine Desjardins, president of the moderate FEUQ student group.

"The end seems to be postponed."

I wonder if police will be banned from wearing masks as well as protestors or if we'll see a double standard.

Says a lot when the deal negotiated by the student leaders can't even be passed.

I tend to agree with VHF, shut down the universities and colleges until a deal is reached. I suspect though that many of the protestors aren't even student so they won't be mpacted.

Well, turns out 2/3 of students are still going, I guess.

Striking Quebec students stormed into a Montreal university on Wednesday in a faceoff with those who want to go to class, as the government met to consider a crackdown against a 14-week dispute that it says could slow the economy.

About 155,000 people - more than a third of the college and university students in the province - are striking to protest against a steep rise in what are some of the lowest tuition fees in North America.
